Re: Belly Dance Trainer Certification Program
Tue, January 16, 2007 - 10:26 AMLOL, I have to admit, I was actually thinking about getting certified in Suhaila's or Hadia's format. But the more I thought about it, I thought it would benefit me more as a teacher and student to get certified by the American College of Sports Medicine. The LAST thing I want to do is hurt others or myself. Plus it would give me more knowledge on how to modify moves if someone has a particular injury/problem. -

Re: Belly Dance Trainer Certification Program
Tue, January 16, 2007 - 1:01 PMThat's a wise choice, Trudi.
I always make a point to ask if there are people who've had surgery or injuries. Sometimes, however, people are hesitant to announce that in class. What I'd like to learn is to spot an injury by how a person moves. I wouldn't mention it during class, but would know how to modify moves for that person and keep moving. -

Re: Belly Dance Trainer Certification Program
Tue, January 16, 2007 - 9:55 PMYou know that's part of the reason I am going back to massage therapy school. You learn a LOT about the muscular and skeletal systems....I'm looking at taking some in depth anatomy classes through TCCC as well...
But I am definitely getting my level I Suhaila cert this year..It's something I demand of myself.

Tue, January 16, 2007 - 11:43 PMI'm certified in Amaya's level I format. She's a CMT, and she imparts a lot of that information during the training process - it's invaluable. -

Re: Belly Dance Trainer Certification Program
Sun, January 21, 2007 - 9:20 AMThis is so important, Tahja! People are just now starting to get the idea that maybe being certified is better than trying to figure out how to teach on your own. I'm a certified English teacher, and it's not so different. I couldn't just walk into a classroom and start teaching; I needed to learn the best techniques and approaches to instruct all types of learners. I'm teaching private dance lessons right now, and I am getting my Suhaila Level I in August at a weeklong workshop. After that, I may decide to teach a full dance class.
Besides, I keep learning new ways to do the basics! I went to an Urban Gypsy class yesterday and learned important techniques to improve my basic movements. I'm so glad I decided to get back to basics; I'm learning so much. And what better way to become a great teacher than to constantly learn and revisit movements and techniques?
There's another log I'd like to throw on the fire here about teaching in general. I think many people see teaching as the pinnacle of success as a dancer; one who teaches is a master at what he or she does. And the latter is true. You must be a master at whatever you are teaching, be it belly dance or badminton. But something I learned early on as an English teacher that really shaped my attitude about teaching. Teaching is a job of service, not of glory. If a person shows up to teach because he or she thinks it will a)bring money or b) bring fame, eventually he or she will be very disappointed. The value placed on the student's learning is reflected most readily in the student's ability to dance. If many students learning from a certain teacher cannot dance well, the teacher may not be really teaching effectively. We've all seen this and we have all been students in these classes. I'd love to see this stop or at least decrease drastically.
At the same time, particularly in your area Tahja, there is a need for a wider base of fusion and ATS teachers. Although there are good teachers teaching in both of these areas, they are not conveniently located to everyone. More options would grow your local community, which is always wonderful!
My two bits. : )
P.S.- I just recommended your arms DVD to someone- it's good teaching! -

Mon, January 22, 2007 - 1:38 AMHee hee!!! One of the rules of writing I have to read up on is "semicolons vs. dash."
For example:
You wrote: But something I learned early on as an English teacher that really shaped my attitude about teaching; teaching is a job of service, not of glory.
I'd write: Something I learned early on as an English teacher that really shaped my attitude about teaching - teaching is a job of service, not of glory. <-- would that also be correct form?
I agree with what you wrote wholeheartedly.

Re: Belly Dance Trainer Certification Program
Tue, January 23, 2007 - 9:13 AMI actually agree with what's been said here...
on other tribes I've seen a few posts of the "I'm a newer dancer and I'm about to start teaching..what do I do"...that's scary!!!!!!!!
Personally, having a dance background myself, I believe a dancer should have a few years under their belt, have some performance experience and have a good solid idea of what is fundamental in the dance form before they venture into teaching.
If you don't understand how the mechanics can affect the body, how the muscles work and react to movement, etc, how can you impart that to students?
I'm getting my Suhaila certification as well because what Suahila teaches has definitely affected my dance and how I think of bellydance and the body in general. I'm looking at other formats as well (FCBD, BSBD and GC), perhaps not for certification persay (is that how that's spelled? Help me out with that one..lol) but for my own foundation and knowledge. Luckily, I have an AMAZING dance mentor to work with, great teachers at Crescent Moon to bounce stuff off of and I'm taking classes with TE to get a nice well rounded vocabulary.
I LOVE the idea of spreading the "dance knowledge" and watching others develop as dancers...It just makes me smile..Almost like watching Kendal develop, if that makes sense.
My dance motto for the year (and for always) is "never stop learning and growing". What I do today may morph into something different over the next year or so..who knows? That's the joy of our dance, is seeing how it speaks to each dancer!

Re: Belly Dance Trainer Certification Program
Thu, January 25, 2007 - 5:52 PMHey Tahja
Just wanted to say thanks for the plug.
I had to think long and hard about certification because it wasn't always something that I believed in. Like a lot of people, I thought, "Certification in what? By what standards?" and all the other logical questions that comes with a discussion like this. BUT what sold me on the idea is that so many people are rudderless when it comes to knowing how to teach. They copy what they saw in their classes (sometimes very badly). That's not the best way to learn. If you could have a template, it would make the path so much easier. I fully expect that my students will take my work, expand upon it, make it their own and be so much better than I was because so much of the work is done for them. They get to bypass so much trial and error. So that's why I developed it. I also like Hadia's TEACHING certification (there are DANCE certifications out there, but few that focus on teaching) too. If anyone is shopping for a teaching certification, it's worth checking out. She's excellent.
